This is, by far, one of the most gorgeous mysteries I have ever read. Written from the perspective of a male protagonist in Spain after the civil wars, it is a great read for both genders. The writing is poetic; the story is detailed and surprising; and the characters themselves are people you hope you meet on the street somewhere (one in particular made me audibly laugh when reading). Its dark, its rich, it has Spanish style. Read it.
There is something over-the-top delicious about Sarah Addison Allen's books. Each one is light, read in two days, and makes you feel like you just ate warm pie. With a hint of what I recently found out is "magic realism," she takes ordinary life and characters and adds an element of charm. This book, Garden Spells, was my first book of Allen's, and it started an instant love affair with her writing. If you want something happy to read, she's your author.
